Fighter Babe Kelly McGill Makes Her Invicta FC Debut this Saturday

Fighter babe “Killer” Kelly McGill (1-0) returns to the cage this Saturday for Invicta FC 9 at the RiverCenter in Davenport, Iowa. Fighting out of Modesto, California we recently caught up with Kelly prior to her Invicta FC debut this Saturday for the interview below to learn a little more about her.

How did you get involved in MMA and how long have you been training?

-I got into MMA by being too competitive. Haha. I was 14 years old when I saw my dad watching a WEC event. I was very interested and taken by the sport at first glance. I jokingly said to my dad, "I could do that!" and he quickly said "Yeah right." I was a total girlie girl at the time so I understood why he said that, but saying 'yeah right' really made me want to at least try it to prove him wrong. Haha. After begging for about a year, daily, my parents finally signed me up for my first jiu-jitsu class and my love for the sport blossomed from there.

Where are you currently training, and what's a typical training week like for you?

-I train at Oakdale and Sonora MMA. A typical week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I go to Full Force Personal Training in Modesto for an hour in the morning and work one on one with my personal trainer Mike Sousa. After that I go to school and what not, and then I go to Oakdale MMA and train for about three hours at night. Tuesday and Thursday are a little different. I go to Oakdale MMA in the morning to do an hour of kickboxing and then I go to school and stuff. Finally I go to Sonora MMA and train for a very long time up there in the high elevation. When I have a fight lined up I do a bunch of other exercises between school and work outs, this is just a brief summary of a typical week.

How did you get the fight nickname “Killer”?

-I don't know or remember exactly how I got my fight name "Killer." I think somebody called me it one time and I liked how well it flowed with my name so I just stuck with it.

Tell us about your upcoming fight, who you're fighting and where?

-I am fighting Saturday November 1st for Invicta FC in Davenport, Iowa against Maegan Goodwin.

What is your best experience as a fighter? What is your worst?

-Signing with Invicta FC is definitely the best experience I've had as a fighter. Fighting for Invicta FC is a dream come true and I am so blessed to be given this opportunity.

-My worst experience as a fighter was having to cut ten pounds in 24 hours for a previous fight because my original opponent pulled out and the only replacement they could fight was a weight class below. That day was so torturous. Haha.

What advice would you give to other women who are reading this interview and want to get started in MMA?

-Never give up. Times are going to get hard, some practices are going to suck, you are going to lose, you are going to get beat up, you are going to be in a lot of pain, and you are going to want to give up. My advice is don't give up. Yes, all those things I listed suck but nothing compares to the feeling you get when you win a fight, make weight, get a move right at practice, or have little kids tell you they look up to you. You have to work hard for what you want, and if you give up you will never get what you wanted. With great sacrifice comes great reward, you just have to keep on pushing forward.

What or who are your inspirations in MMA and life?

-Cris Cyborg, Julie Kedzie, and Tecia Torres are the main MMA fighters I look up to. I admire the way all three of those ladies handled their careers and remain so down to earth. My two true inspirations in life are my parents. They are both so hard working and amazing human beings that I truly do look up to and admire them both deeply.

Who are your favorite MMA fighters?

-Cris Cyborg, Julie Kedzie, Tecia Torres, GSP, Rolando Velasco, and Cat Zingano.

Lastly before we let you go we would love to hear about your future plans and let you send some shout outs.

Any future plans or dreams?

-I hope to go through the bantamweight division and become the Invicta FC champion. I hope to be #1 in the world someday. Most of all, I hope to leave a positive impact on the sport and for the next generation of fighters.

Any shout outs you would like to make?

-Thank you to everybody at Oakdale, Sonora, and Merced MMA. Thank you Full Force Personal Training in Modesto. Thank you to Dragon Do Fight Gear and Modules Technology Inc. Thank you to my parents and boyfriend Rolando Velasco for everything. Thank you to Shannon Knapp, Julie Kedzie, and Invicta FC. Thank you Babes of MMA for allowing me this opportunity.

Our November 2014 MMA babe of the month is World Series of Fighting ring card girl and MMA model Michelle Ulibarri! This 24 year old stunner is 5’4”, 115 lbs, measures 34-25-35 and calls Las Vegas and Salt Lake City home. Along with her ring carding duties for World Series of Fighting Michelle has also modeled for MMA Xplosion, LA Boxing, Wand Fight team, Badboy Clothing, Venum Clothing and been featured in numerous MMA magazines and websites including Babes of MMA, Fight! Magazine, Fighter’s Only and MMA Uncaged. Outside the world of MMA Michelle is a full-time mother, published fitness model and fitness bikini competitor. She has worked with the likes of Golds Gym Products, Pro Form Equipment, Weslo Fitness Equipment, Health Rider Equipment, The Sports Authority, Reebok Apparel and Equipment, Icon Fitness, Muscle Pharm and been featured in magazines like Oxygen Magazine, Ultra-Fit Magazine and Bodybuilding Magazine. Keep on reading below to find out what else we learned about our November 2014 MMA babe of the month Michelle Ulibarri.

How did you get into the world of MMA?

-My sons’ dad, Jorge Lopez, is a former UFC veteran and is actually signed with the WSOF for a 4 fight deal. So since we met I have pretty much lived the MMA life from the moment I wake up to the moment I fell asleep. Then a little over 2 years ago I won my contract with WSOF as one of the ring girls and have been a part of the sport from a total different view.

What were you doing before you became involved in MMA?

-It was 8 years ago so I was oblivious to the sport and was a junior in high school at the time. I'm absolutely humbled to have become a part of it. These athletes define the word "athlete". Some of the hardest working men and women I know. It’s not only physically tough but mentally. It has to be a part of you to get into a cage with someone else whether it is a friend or a foe and to treat it as profession as these fighters do. Do their job; beating each other up then hug and shake hands as soon as the bell rings.

Who are your favorite MMA fighters?

-First without question would have to be Wanderlei Silva. When I moved to Las Vegas, he and his family took me in as their own and opened my eyes up to so much of this world. Tea Silva was always pushing me and helping me in different aspects of the sport. A lot of their contacts including Badboy, Fighter's Only and Venom all came about because of Wanderlei and Tea. They have helped my career more then they know and I will be forever grateful. Then on an athlete stand point he was one of the most professional fighters with one of the biggest hearts I have ever known. He is all about this sport, his family, his fans and his love for god.

-One of my other favorite fighters is Josh Burkman, another fellow Utahn. He always brings such an amazing show and is so professional but when his hand is raised in victory it’s all about his gratitude toward his family. He brings his kids into the cage for them to share in his glory.

What would your fight name be if you were a fighter? Michelle "?" Ulibarri

-Michelle “Fearless” Ulibarri. I've overcome and lived through some serious hardships but last year when I was down and being hard on myself I got the word fearless tattooed on my finger. This is to always remind myself; I've done so much in my life, pushed forward when I thought I didn't have it in me and can get through any obstacle life throws my way.

What is something most people don't know about you?

-When I was in 6th grade my principal picked me out of our entire school and from there I was chosen out of 1,000 applicants to go to the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics. One of the coolest experiences I've ever seen.

How do you enjoy spending your free time?

-I love being around both my boys, Stryder and Cameron. My son is 3 and is so full of life, shows us something new every single day. When the world is so negative he is the happiest little soul and brings the biggest joy to our life. I also like to work out, golf, camping, fishing, ice fishing, go four wheeling, ride snowmobiles, and snowboard, pretty much anything adventurous. I grew up a huge tomboy, one of the only girls in my entire family. My entire family is very outdoorsy and has taught me to love the great outdoors.

Although already alluded to earlier are you single?

-No, I'm currently in a serious relationship, exciting news I will announce very soon! ;)

What do you look for in a guy?

-Someone who will make me laugh. If you make me cry from laughing even if it’s from the stupidest of jokes you will have my heart, no doubt. I also look for someone that really wants to spend time together, quality time.

What are your turn-ons?

-A great personality, someone who is spontaneous (structure is nice in certain areas but I love to just pick up and go on a whim).

What are your turnoffs?

-Someone who is all about themselves (cocky, self absorbed), someone who is boring, controlling, jealous, or negative.

What would you say is your best feature?

-My eyes, you can tell a lot about a person from just looking into their eyes.

What are your future plans or dreams in life?

-Future plans: I'm currently going through real estate school; it will give me the financial stability but the flexible schedule to continue following my dreams as a model and a ring girl. So if you know anyone or live in Utah yourself you know who to contact! ;)

-Dreams in life: To have a huge loving family and live a spontaneous adventurous life.

Any special shout outs or thank you's?

-I'd like to thank my family from WSOF for all they have done for me as well as the other girls! As well as my very own family, especially my mom she has been my biggest fan from as early as I can remember. She drove me to and from dance and gymnastics 3 or more times a week, an hour each way, for a decade or more of my life. She was always in the stands cheering me on at almost every game she could get off work or out of work early for. She is the definition of a mom, she was there to encourage and push me, wiped my tears, scrapes and bruises, but always put me in my place when I was acting a fool. They have all put up with my crazy life and spontaneous attitude. They have always stuck with me, supported and pushed me to follow my dreams and because of them I have and will continue to pursue my dreams. Also thank you Babes of MMA for the feature and for always supporting my career!

Thank you very much for your time Michelle and glad to have you back on Babes of MMA! You can catch Michelle and the WSOF ring card girls live tomorrow night from the USF Sun Dome in Tampa, Florida. Click here to purchase tickets or tune into WSOF.com for the preliminaries starting at 7pm EST followed by the main card on NBC Sports Network starting at 9pm ET. Fighter Babe Roma Pawelek Makes her Pro MMA Debut Tomorrow

$

0
Fighter babe Roma “Panther” Pawelek makes her professional MMA debut tomorrow night for MMA Beatdown 12 at the 4 Bears Casino in New Town, North Dakota. Roma is currently a student at the University of Oregon pursuing a law degree, a personal trainer, fly fisher, jiu-jitsu competitor, and a professional MMA fighter who has tracked rhinos in the African wilderness, lived in Costa Rica, and trained parkour. Fighting out of Eugene, Oregon we recently caught up with Roma prior to her big debut tomorrow for the interview below to learn a little more about her.

How did you get involved in MMA and how long have you been training?

-It all started when I was a freshman at Carleton College in Minnesota. I was in the college gym training for another bodybuilding competition when I met philosophy professor and boxing guru, Gordon Marino. He invited me to attend his underground boxing club at neighboring St. Olaf College. I was hooked and eventually started my own Fight Club in college. I didn’t start MMA until I moved to Montana in 2010.

Where are you currently training, and what's a typical training week like for you?

-Right now I am training at Performance Martial Arts in Springfield, OR. I often train twice a day (jiu-jitsu open mat in the morning or conditioning) and jiu-jitsu class, boxing class, and MMA in the evenings. As often as I can I drive to Portland to train at Rose City FC.

Tell us about your upcoming fight, who you're fighting and where?

-My next fight is for Beatdown on November 29th at the Four Bears Casino in New Town, ND. I am fighting Ashleigh Heustis (2-0) at 130lbs. This will be my professional debut.

What is your best experience as a fighter? What is your worst?

-The best experience is feeling your hard work pay off when you get your hand raised for a win.

-The worst feeling has been dealing with injuries.

What advice would you give to other women who are reading this interview and want to get started in MMA?

-First and foremost recognize that MMA is a long journey. Try not to get frustrated in the beginning (it can seem overwhelming). Find a good coach and make sure you train with teammates who are close to your size and won’t injure you.

What or who are your inspirations in MMA and life?

-For MMA, I’m inspired by some of the coaches I have worked with who have sacrificed a lot to achieve their level of success (Ben Baxter, Ryan Cunningham, and Tyrone Angolia). It is also inspiring to watch my teammate, Brent Primus, train hard to prepare for his fights.

-In life, I’m inspired by my mom and stepdad (who I refer to as dad). My mom was a young, single mother who moved to the US from Poland and had to learn the language while finding a way to support me. My dad came into my life when I was six and because of his constant encouragement I owe my success in life to him and all he sacrificed for my siblings and me.

Who are your favorite MMA fighters?

-Brent Primus, Andrea KGB Lee, and Charmaine Tweet.

How do you enjoy your free time when not training or fighting?

-I love to go fly fishing every Sunday with my boyfriend or spend time outside.

For those who will inquire we have a couple questions for the male readership as well.

What do you look for in a guy?

-I look for someone who is honest, trustworthy, intelligent, and pushes me to be the best version of myself.

What are your turn-ons?

-Trains jiu-jitsu, makes me laugh, smart, compassionate, and of course, good looking.

What are your turnoffs?

-Someone who doesn’t work out, hipsters, hippies, and someone who lacks confidence.

What would you say is your best feature?

-My eyes.

Lastly before we let you go we would love to hear about your future plans and let you send some shout outs.

Any future plans or dreams?

-I want to earn my black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and fight for Invicta FC.

Any shout outs you would like to make?

-I want to thank all my teammates and coaches from Performance Martial Arts, Linda Kriner (my manager), Roger Mitterling, Tim Frieh DC, DeathWish Coffee, MMA Roadhog, Grit Mouthguards, my family back in Illinois, and my boyfriend Andrew.

Thank you very much for your time Roma and good luck on fight night! Click here for tickets and send your shout outs to Roma on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!
